Follow-up with Auto Insurance Agent

In reference to the underwriting information requirements for the State
of PA, the Department of Insurance has informed me that they have no
regulations in place to regulate what information is collected by the
insurance industry nor to regulate what happens to that information.
The person I spoke to saw no conflict between the auto insurance
industry demanding from consumers a signed statement that allows them to
contact employers, neighbors, or credit agencies when a consumer applies
for mandatory insurance, and the consumer's wish not to provide personal
or medical information. There was no expectation that the insurance
company would request this information however, since the State has
evidently understood that they would be doing credit checks and
accessing DMV records. Somehow the request or expectation to do gather
this sort of information has now expanded to gather any information
desired by the insurance industry because "they can." I don't have the
code but will try to get my local representative to provide those
details. Meanwhile, the Insurance Department says that the companies
cannot deny insurance for no reason and that any such denial would be
investigated. It was suggested I apply and get the refusal in writing
so that they can look into the matter. Seems like a good idea to me.
