RE: "Internet Access Modem" that is "nearly 5,000 %" faster

This sounds like that compression software that came out a few years ago
where the inventors claimed lossless compression and that you could keep
recompressing and each time get a 50x compression...

5000% faster? That is 50 times faster than currently available analog
modems or 1.440 megabits (28.8 * 50). My gosh!... Where have I seen that
  number?

Hey, I'll be helpful for a while. Check out
  http://www.westell.com/pr012.html
I have quoted it in its entirety below. and will rip it apart as best as
  possible here.

  1) It's definitely not ISDN as we normally use it "sustained downstream data
rates of 1.544 Mbps (T1 equivalent toward the customer). In addition, it
will support 64 kbps interactive, upstream rates (toward the Internet) while
providing simultaneous POTS (plain old telephone service) and all over a
  single copper wire pair."

  2) "ADSL represents a robust data transmission technology that serves as a
  replacement for all forms
of dial-up ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network), standard analog modem
  technology,
switched 56 kbps service and dedicated digital services."

I don't feel ready to be replaced. Supplement, yes.

  3) It reminds me of a standard two way cable MODEM. These are asymmetrical
though rarely at exactly 1.544mbit / 64,000bits second.

  3) I guess if you are a telco, or have your own switches it might be a
  interesting offering.

Here is the web page in its full glory.

   PRESS RELEASE : December 11, 1995

Westell's ADSL Supports Internet Access at T1 Speeds

AURORA, Ill., December 11, 1995 - Westell, Inc. demonstrated its ADSL
  (Asymmetric Digital
Subscriber Line) high-speed data transmission product providing Internet
  access at speeds of over
30 times those available with today's best analog modem technology.
  Westell's ADSL Internet
session utilized a T1 facility terminating at the serving central office.
  Using the ADSL circuit,
Westell extended that high-speed bandwidth over the last 12,000 feet of the
  local access network
utilizing a single copper pair. The ADSL equipment enabled
  multimedia-intense Worldwide Web
browsing and large file downloading with no perceptible delay.

AURORA, Ill., December 11, 1995 - Westell, Inc. demonstrated its ADSL
  (Asymmetric Digital
Subscriber Line) high-speed data transmission product providing Internet
  access at speeds of over
30 times those available with today's best analog modem technology.
  Westell's ADSL Internet
session utilized a T1 facility terminating at the serving central office.
  Using the ADSL circuit,
Westell extended that high-speed bandwidth over the last 12,000 feet of the
  local access network
utilizing a single copper pair. The ADSL equipment enabled
  multimedia-intense Worldwide Web
browsing and large file downloading with no perceptible delay.

High-performance ADSL, leveraging Westell's knowledge of telephone equipment
  technology, is
capable of sustained downstream data rates of 1.544 Mbps (T1 equivalent
  toward the customer).
In addition, it will support 64 kbps interactive, upstream rates (toward the
  Internet) while providing
simultaneous POTS (plain old telephone service) and all over a single copper
  wire pair.

ADSL represents a robust data transmission technology that serves as a
  replacement for all forms
of dial-up ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network), standard analog modem
  technology,
switched 56 kbps service and dedicated digital services. These digital
  services include T1,
fractional T1 and dedicated 56 kbps service. ADSL acts as a transparent
  pipeline for delivery of
high-speed data from point to point in a local telecommunications network.
  This new technology is
perfectly suited for business and residential applications, such as
  high-speed Internet access and
  work-at-home telecommuting.

ADSL extends the high-speed network to remote sites completely independent
  of software,
hardware configuration and data compression levels. The Westell
  demonstration employed ADSL
in conjunction with proprietary navigation software and a standard personal
  computer in the
transfer files between the server (Internet) and the customer at dramatic
  speeds. The technology
will allow customers to increase their productivity while computing in the
  network environment, at
the same time drastically reducing their on-line expenses.

Westell will formally introduce the Enhanced FlexCAP® ADSL units in early
  1996 and will deliver
the products with flexible network and hardware interfaces including
  ethernet 10BASE-T and
V.35 to their customers, the telephone companies. The telcos will, in turn,
  offer this service to their
customers at competitive prices for all their data communicating needs. The
  FlexCAP units have
built-in maintenance features and performance monitoring that can be managed
  by AccessVision®,
  Westell's scaleable network management system.

Westell, Inc. delivers a broad range of analog, digital and fiber
  telecommunications products that
are used in the last mile of the local access network.

Westell, Inc. is a leading provider of telecommunications products based
  upon the ADSL
technology. ADSL enables a wide variety of interactive multimedia services
  over existing copper
wire. Westell Technologies, Inc. is a publicly traded company (NASDAQ:
  WSTL), a global
supplier of telecommunications transmission equipment and is widely
recognized as the leader in the
development and deployment of Digital Subscriber Line technology.

Westell, Inc. is an ISO 9001 certified company.
