LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Here's a sample letter to adapt and send to your local paper.
NO TO NAFTA EXPANSION
Dear Editor,
In the name of "free trade," the North American Free Trade
Agreement and its global big brother, the World Trade
Organization, have weakened key environmental and public health
laws. NAFTA has made increased border pollution, quickened the
pace of deforestation, weakened food safety standards and
allowed corporate polluters to dump their waste across the
border.
And it's about to get worse. When Congress returns from its
August recess, they are expected to give the Clinton
Administration authority to expand NAFTA to South America,
starting with Chile. NAFTA has done enough harm, and should
not be expanded until the environmental damage caused by the
agreement can be repaired, and guarantees that no more harm
will be done are put into place.
Most Americans support responsible trade that opens markets
but preserves our own environmental protections and ensures a
high level of environmental performance by those who export
products to us. But these protections are undermined by
NAFTA.
Congress must ensure that NAFTA is not expanded unless it is
fixed first.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Citizen
