  >100days of action against the oil industry
  >
  >100days is a growing network of groups and individuals. It is an
  >initiative to challenge the oil industry throughout the 100 day
  >countdown to Kyoto climate conference in december 1997. It is also a
  >call to action for others to join with us
  >
  >NEWS

  >
  >CHEVRON U-TURN Friends of Cardigan Bay campaigners recently notched up
  >another victory as oil giant Chevron (owners of Gulf Oil) announced a
  >second 12 month delay in its drilling program.
  >In a pre-100 days warm up, activists invaded the their London offices on
  >Thurs 7 Aug. They barricaded the top floor, "adjusted" the company's
  >computer system and adorned the exterior in "STOP THE DRILLING" banners
  >for three hours. Within days Chevron not only announced the delay but
  >also agreed to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment into the
  >scheme.
  >As one Friend commented: "The struggle to save the Bay will continue
  >until it's' future is secured forever! The discovery of a new group of
  >resident Risso Dolphins and another sighting of a huge Leatherbacked
  >Turtle proves that Cardigan Bay is a mostly unknown, unspoilt
  >wilderness. We will keep it this way." CBEF! Have also been out at BP
  >stations and have more actions coming up.
  >
  >B PICKET In a week when BP backed down from suing Greenpeace over its
  >occupation of the Stena Dee oil platform in the Atlantic Frontier,
  >100DAYS kicked off on Saturday 23rd August with a national picket of
  >(naturally enough) around 25 BP garages.
  >About 500 activists from Greenpeace, Friends of The Earth, The Green
  >Party, CND and Earth First! sent bleary-eyed pump attendants scrambling
  >for their phones as forecourts underwent a Complete Value System
  >Overhaul as banners proclaimed "BP: the climate is against you" and
  >passers by tooted horns in support. A rooftop protest at London's Park
  >Lane branch attracted gun-toting Diplomatic Police as dozens of
  >millionaire-types added their names to Greenpeace's petition against oil
  >exploration in the North Atlantic.
  >Activists in Lincolnshire disrupted a grand opening of a new BP garage
  >with their protest much to the embarrassment of the company.
  >
  >Exposing Shell in Nigeria While 20 men still await trial for the same
  >charges as Ken Saro Wiwa, renewed ethnic conflict in Warri region of the
  >Niger Delta has seen attacks on Shell, Chevron and Texaco installations
  >as local frustration has spilt into unrest. 200 have been killed, whole
  >settlements destroyed and damage caused estimated at $50million. The
  >latest DELTA magazine (#3) which is just hot off the press looks at the
  >oil chaos in the Niger Delta, Ogoni refugees, Shell's political links,
  >women's mobilisation, and direct action, and gives a full update on
  >Ogoni, Shell and Nigeria. To receive a hard copy or email version,
  >contact DELTA direct and enclose a donation if possible.

  >APEC Alert! While Energy ministers from 18 member countries of APEC
  >(Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meet in Edmonton Alberta, an APEC
  >counter conference was held on Saturday 23rd (100 days) drawing
  >attention to the impact of the petroleum industry on human rights, first
  >nations people and the environment. Organiser Susan Brigham writes "the
  >provincial and federal governments have been very proud of the fact that
  >shell and Mobil have signed a deal that cuts them into the expansion of
  >the Suncor oil sands project in northern Alberta. It is time people of
  >Alberta and Canada became aware of the ugly face of these oil
  >companies." To learn more contact Susan Brigham on 431-0352
