30 believed killed in Nigeria clashes, paper says
LAGOS, Nigeria (Reuter) - Clashes erupted between two village communities in
an oil-producing area of southeastern Nigeria and at least 30 people were
believed killed, a local newspaper reported Monday.
The independent paper Thisday said the clashes with guns and dynamite
between the villages of Beletiama and Liama in Bayelsa State were sparked by
the killing of an alcohol-seller by her customer.
The paper did not say whether oil production had been affected.
Scores of people have been killed during clashes in neighboring Delta State
since March between Iteskiri and Ijaw communities, hampering oil production.
Ethnic and community clashes are common in Nigeria, which is Africa's most
populous nation with over 100 million people and more than 250 ethnic
groups. Reut10:52 07-21-97
