  Hello kids...
  heres hoping youve been waking up smiling. Just a short note to let you
  know about the developing Shell in Nigeria/ Ogoni support campaign.
  
  Komene Famaa - who sends his huge thanks to all - is back safe in Rome,
  after his whirlwind tour. Amongst other places, he heads to Ireland in
  October. Komenes visit mobilised a lot of support in a wide range of
  groups, which we now need to build upon. 
  
  In particular, Friends of the Earth Australia have adopted the Shell in
  Nigeria/ Ogoni support campaign as an official campaign, and Amnesty
  have adopted a Ogoni refugee campaign, and lots of links were made with
  the trade union movement, church, humanitarian and student movements.
  
  An overall report of what went well and not so well is in the email
  which follows, and 
   a budget breakdown of the Komene Famaa Speaking tour is at the end of
  this email.
  
  To map a way forward, Matthew Benson has organised:
  SHELL OUT OF NIGERIA! - BRAINSTORMING SESSION
  Wed, July 23 1997, 6.00pm - 8.30pm, The Green Iguana Cafe King Street,
  Newtown Sydney.
  
  Itd be great for this meeting, if people could forward any suggestions
  or ideas about the future directions of the campaign to:

  at MATTB@fisher.biz.usyd.edu.au 
  
  The purposes of holding the gathering so far are:-
  . To develop a strategy to raise awareness about $hell in Nigeria in the
  broader community;
   . To allocate tasks (for example, we urgently need someone to take an
  active role raising the issue with trade-unions, as a follow-up to
  meetings with unions already held with Komene);
   . To develop action ideas to commemorate the anniversary of the
  execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa; 
  . To build upon the Aust Senate passing a resolution condemning human
  rights abuses
  in Nigeria;
   . To find ways to pressure the Nigerian dictatorship / $hell to release
  the 19 political prisoners currently threatened with execution;
   . To link the $hell out of Nigeria campaign with other indigenous
  people's struggles.
  
  proposed agenda :-
   6.00pm-Introductions. Appoint facilitator and minute taker. 
  6.20pm-Brainstorm overall aims of the $hell out of Nigeria campaign. 
  6.30pm-Identify the skills and resources of the group.
   6.50pm-Brainstorm ideas about how to meet our overall aims. 
  7.30pm-Review ideas and discuss the timeline of the overall campaign.
   7.50pm-Identify campaign tasks.
   8.10pm-Put names to tasks and work out details for next meeting.
   8.30pm-End meeting.
