  A note from our private conversation:
  1.  Ok, the local loop may indeed have a higher bandwidth than 3khz
      Indeed, if the wire is cat 3, 5, etc. it could be as high as
      10 Mbps (with repeaters every 300 feet).
      [does anyone know how long cat 3 wire must be (how many miles)
      before the effective bandwidth is 3 khz? 10? 100?]]
  
  2.  But note Armstrong's comment -- both 28.8 and ISDN ride on
      carriers.  So this business about ISDN being inherently simpler --
      isn't the case.  They ride on different carriers, but carriers
      nonetheless, thus requiring demodulation at the other end.
