Dioxin limits in water from HWIs

  COMMISSION PROPOSES LIMITS FOR EMISSIONS OF HEAVY METALS AND DIOXINS

  (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has just proposed an amendment
  to the 1994 Directive on the incineration of dangerous waste in order to
  add limit values for the emission of heavy metals (cadmium and mercury)
  and dioxins into the water (there are already limits for the emission of
  these substances into the atmosphere, substances that are toxic for human
  health).

  These are the limits proposed :
  1) heavy metals: mercury: 0.001 mg/liter; cadmium 0.02 mg/l.  For a
  series of other heavy metals, the Commission proposes a total limit value
  of 5 mg/l;
  2) dioxins: 0.5 ng/l (1 ng = 1/1,000,000,000 grams).
