Re: triclosan

  Hi, again,

Now that I've got my mailer straight again...

Yes, triclosan has been around for quite some time,
and I have been ranting and raving about it for quite
some time. It's in everything: deodorant, soaps,
  dishwashing
liquids, anywhere where the word "deodorant
  "
or disinfectant appears. It's bad news. I would tell
people "I don't like putting PCBs under my arms,
  thanks".

Look in http://www.cqs.com/dioxin.htm for the list of
  products
that I've found so far that should be avoided to
  prevent
dioxin exposure. There are probably more.

Darn, I've given away the quiz answer. When you read
  dioxin.htm,
you'll figure out why the EPA can't release the 1994
  Reassessment.

  Oh, well...

  Subject: triclosan

many of you have seen consumer product labels w/ the
  product 'triclosan' as
a disinfectant or antimicrobial (especially now that
  epa has laxened its
  allowe-without-having-to-register-as-a-pesticide
  pesticidal claims policy).
i had been assuming it may be a chlorophenol,
  contaminated w/ dioxins et
al., because of the name & because it many past (and
  current?) consumer
products, incl. toothpaste & mouthwasah & soaps,
  contain chlorophenols.

there was recently some mass media reporting of a
  newly fda aproved colgate
toothpaste, with triclosan, that fights gingivitis &
  plaque. i finally
overcame my inertia, and after several tries learned
  from fda the c.a.s.
no. what follows is the various files i was able to
  download from the web
using the cas # (no tox. factsheets--i didn't check
  the pesticide tox
factsheet sites, and the ntp's site (the best, least
  biased ones) was
  down).

shock & horror, i saw triclosan (which is a chloropheno
  l after all) has the
following structure (pardon the crummy representation):

  OH Cl
      \/\ _O_ /\/
        | | | |
  Cl/ \ / \/ \Cl

yet again, all but a dioxin, thus likely to be heavily
  contaminated w/ same...

note one of its synnonyms, containing "2,4-dichlorophen
  oxy", tho i can't
quite see the familiar, one ring, 2,4-dichlorophenoxy
  herbicide
  structure...

anyone w/ something to add about the prevalence of
  such compounds in
consumer products we ingest or apoply to skin, about
  levels of pcdd/f/hcb
etc contamination, past or present, please post to the
  list. i for one
would love to learn more, and i never cease to be
  stunned by the toxins we
allow in our consumer products. it's as if we were
  back in the 1940's and
  '50's...

  footwear as men's
hosiery and insoles of shoes are called "odor-eaters"
  because it is claimed
that this chemical can suppress the odor produced by
  foot organism.
