Another example would be Compaq's sales of computers without sound cards.
Last year, Compaq was under pressure from Microsoft not to ship PCs
without Windows. Even though the 1995 DOJ consent order prevented this
from being a formal agreement, MS had lots of pricing leverage to make
this work. So the only way you could buy a PC from Compaq that did not
have Windows, was if you bought a "server" model. The server models
permitted tons of customization, but you couldn't get a sound card. This
basically protected the Windows monopoly for client machines.
