  Regarding the postings on Basic and the early history
  of DOS...
  
  Try "Fire In The Valley" for the early history of Basic.
  I think there is something there about the Home Brew
  Computer Club and early Basic compilers.
  
  I believe the introduction of MSDOS was the first time
  that the standards business strategy described
  in Microsoft Secrets was applied.  It was brilliantly
  successful.  The "vanilla MSDOS" vendors who supported
  it:  Northstar, Victor, etc. are history.  PCDOS
  became the real standard.  (I was at Northstar at the
  time)
