Shell says studies exporting Peru gas to Brazil

AREQUIPA, Peru, Sept 24 (Reuter) - Royal Dutch/Shell Group (RD.AS)
(SHEL.L) said Wednesday it was studying the possibility of exporting
its natural gas from Peru's Camisea fields to Brazil.

``There is a great possibility of exporting Camisea gas to neighboring
countries -- especially Brazil, where there is high demand for this
energy source,'' Bernard Fogarty, Shell's marketing manager said in a
  speech at a business conference.

The Brazilian government has repeatedly said it hoped the gas could be
  exported to its country.

Shell, which is the operating partner in a consortium with Mobil (MOB)
to develop the Camisea fields in Peru's southern jungle, plans to
transport the gas by pipeline 300 miles (500 km) west to Lima on the
Pacific coast. It will then export some of the gas.

In Peru's largest investment project, Shell will also take the
pipeline south of Lima to Pisco and is considering further extensions
into the heart of the country's mining sector in Peru's southernmost
  regions.

Shell is halfway through a license to explore the Camisea reserves,
which are estimated to hold 11 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and
600 million barrels of natural gas liquids.

The firm hopes to begin early production in 1999 and bring natural gas
to Lima by pipeline in 2001.
