Brief Ogoni 20 update
Dear all,
I spoke briefly with Nigeria last night and found out the following
regarding the current Ogoni 20 hunger strike:
-It is set to last 10 days, ending on the 21st. At that time the 20 will
reevaluate, looking at their health (which is already quite poor), and how
much attention they have been able to draw to their plight and the Ogoni
struggle overall. Depending on what they see at that time, they will either
continue or stop.
-They are calling on people around the world to join them in solidarity.
Already, at least 25 have done so in Port Harcourt. If you decide to join
them, even if only for a short time, please be sure to post something to
this listserve. We'll ensure that the info gets passed back.
-The trial of the Ogoni 20 lawyers (Robert Azibaola and Uche Okonkwu) begins
tomorrow, the 14th, in Port Harcourt. These lawyers were arrested and
charged with obstruction of justice last year when they intervened to stop a
journalist - who was simply trying to photograph the 20 in court - from
being arrested. They intervened, they were arrested.
All for now.
