Surviving a War With Patents
December 10, 1999
by Kevin G. Rivette and David Kline
Patents have never been glamorous, but savvy
executives are learning their value, and
with good reason--patent licensing revenues
jumped from $15 billion in 1990 to more
than $100 billion in just eight years. That's
incentive enough for companies to carefully
map their existing patents and strategize future
efforts. But patents can be a
double-edged sword, bringing wealth to those who
carefully mine the intellectual
property within their companies while visiting
disaster upon those who blithely infringe
upon the work of others.
