It is standard not to sell the copyright to a painting when you sell  
the painting. They are separate considerations. Artists often retain  
exhibiting rights on paintings they sell, and may impose various  
other restrictions.

Yes it's the general state of affairs. Any artist who has been  
through the art school system in the last decade or two knows not to  
transfer copyright, how to licence work for reproduction, what their  
moral rights are, etc.

If we can just teach them copyleft... ;-)
