Interesting. I can't image the British Government not extending the copyright term, although I hope they don't. To me, "50 Years" has always been the sweet spot for copyright terms, regardless of type of media, regardless of nation. I can't possibly understand why an artist, any artist, including U2, would not see that 50 years is fair.
If the British extend the copyright term, they are going to enter the world of Sonny Bono Copyright... also known as perpetual lobbying copyright. If they extend it, say for 20 extra years, 17 years from now they will be lobbying for another 20 years. I hope the Britsh people will fight the possible extension, and explain to Sir Richard that he can still make money from his music... burn the songs to a CD and package them, sell them, re-record them, perform them, mix them, mash them, etc. The only difference is that everyone else in the UK will be able to do the same. :-)
