I think that fees on certain kinds of products (such as DAT tapes or
blank CDs, or connectivity, or whatever) could potentially be a good
substitute for prohibition of copying, as a method of supporting
artists.

(Of course, what the publishers want is both the fees AND the
prohibition.)
