    There's nothing strained about it.  This is the standard for patenting
    any chemical compound, not just genes.

If this criterion is used for chemicals other than genes, that doesn't
make it any less strained.

It would make more sense to have a policy that whoever isolates a
compound in pure form can get a patent on the process which was used
to isolate it, but not on the compound itself.
