[stop-imf] Update on Fall Demos

As most on this list presumably know, largescale protests against the IMF
and World Bank are planned for this fall in Washington, D.C., during the
institutions' annual meetings.

For those marking your calendars, the 10 or so days of surrounding
activities will run from September 25 to October 4. A large march and
rally, and civil disobedience activities, will take place on September 30.
Essential Action will be co-sponsoring a major teach-in on the IMF and
World Bank from September 27 to September 29, about which more soon.

The Mobilization for Global Justice is serving as the host committee for
the week and a half of actions in DC. MGJ's website is up and running at
www.globalizethis.org. The site includes an event calendar, and is
regularly updated.

Attention in DC to the fall protests is already picking up, with the IMF
and Bank announcing that they are shrinking the meetings to two days (from
six), the DC police requesting an outrageous $50 million in federal
subsidies for the protests (reduced to $38 million with the reduction in
meeting time), and the police strangely encouraging the IMF to negotiate
with protesters and maybe even offering to mediate (our response: we
welcome the DC police efforts to push the IMF and World Bank to cancel
poor country debt, end structural adjustment, open their meetings and stop
environmentally destructive lending).

Meanwhile, the range of actors participating in the protests is steadily
increasing, with the AFL-CIO issuing a call to action and making clear
that it intends to be increasingly active in the campaigns against the IMF
and World Bank.

The next several posts relate to the fall protests. Traffic on this list
is going to intensify over the next two months, as the protests near.
