[Random-bits] European consultation on software patents

I missed this when it was first announced, but the European Commission
has announced a study and consultation on software patents.   Public
comments are accepted through December 15, 2000.  This issue is closely
tied to the issuance of business methods patents.  There has also been
quite a bit of attention, in Europe, to the impact of software patents
on the free/(open source) software movement.  Jamie
