          Net Patent Bill Introduced
          by Kathleen Ellis

          1:50 p.m. Oct. 3, 2000 PDT

WASHINGTON -- The way current regulations are written, you could
probably get a patent for the practice of selling hair dryers over the
Internet. If two congressional Democrats get their way, the days of
"obvious" business practice patents are numbered.

Congressmen Rick Boucher (D-Virginia) and Howard Berman
(D-California) have introduced the Business Method Patent Improvement
Act of 2000, which will be debated during what is likely to be a very
busy year for patent and copyright issues on Capitol Hill. "This bill is
going to be the leading intellectual property (subject) of the next
session," said Boucher.
