Chile on Friday became the first Latin American country to sign a
comprehensive deal with drug companies that will significantly reduce
the cost of providing treatment to people suffering from HIV and Aids.

Free treatment with double and triple therapy drug cocktails costs the
Chilean government some $700 a month per patient, which will be halved
under the new agreement. Some drugs are being offered with an 80 per
cent discount.
The participating pharmaceutical companies include GlaxoSmithKline,
Merck Sharp & Dohme, Bristol Myers Squibb and Boehringer Ingelheim.
