               Council permits importation of generic
                drug

THE Medicines Control Council has given permission for the importation
of a generic equivalent of the drug fluconazole, used for certain AIDS
infections, despite its opposition to the importation of a similar
generic equivalent by AIDS activists.

The registration it has issued is in terms of the law and enables the
council to allow the use, under certain circumstances, of a drug that
has not been registered. It does not require on-site inspections and can
be granted with certification that the drugs works the way it should
within the human body.
