Thanks to Dr. David Henry, I have some information on the Australian and
US prices for AstraZeneca's (Pri)Losec, its brand name for omeprazole.

Using the (AU) 28 unit and (US) 30 unit 20 mg packages for comparison,
we have the following comparisons:

Current US price PriLosec per pill $3.52

   Price in Australia, pre-generic entry
      (AU 2.96 x .53) $1.57

   Price in Australia, post-generic entry
      (AU 2.06 x .53) $1.09

Jamie - I went and checked - the Australian prices of omeprazole are as
follows:

In Nov 1998 (pre-generic) the price of 28 * 20 mg capsules was $83:00
In Nov 1998 (pre-generic) the price of 28 * 10 mg capsules was $51.53

Current price of 28* 20 mg is $57.54
Current price of 28* 10 mg is $36.52

All Australian dollar prices.

Interestingly the use of cost-minimisation analysis has meant that not
only did the Losec (Prilosec) brand have to come to meet the negotiated
price of the generic, but the other proton pump inhibitors have had to
do so also - the equivalent strengths are all priced the same

David
