For the first time=2C the International AIDS Conference will be held on=
the
African continent and in a country where a significant proportion of th=
e
population has HIV=2FAIDS=2E People with HIV=2FAIDS in South Africa - a=
nd in all
developing countries - are facing a severe crisis of access to the
life-saving medications=2E The antiretroviral drugs that have transform=
ed
HIV=2FAIDS from a death sentence to a chronic disease in developed coun=
tries
are largely unavailable in developing countries=2C priced beyond the me=
ans of
most people=2E
UNAIDS=2C WHO=2C and a group of pharmaceutical companies recently annou=
nced that
they are discussing price reductions for HIV=2FAIDS drugs=2E While this=
is a
positive development=2C few details or commitments have been communicat=
ed=2C and
many questions remain=2E
M=E9decins Sans Fronti=E8res (MSF=29 and the Treatment Action Campaign =
=28TAC=29 will
host a joint satellite conference at the Durban 2000 International AIDS=
Conference entitled "Improving Access to HIV=2FAIDS Drugs in Developing=
Countries=2C=22 at which speakers from Africa=2C Asia=2C Europe=2C USA =
and elsewhere
will examine the next steps in the fight for access to care for people =
with
HIV=2FAIDS=2C addressing issues of drug pricing=2C medical needs=2C leg=
al and
political strategies to widen access to treatment for HIV=2FAIDS in dev=
eloping
countries=2E Case studies will be presented=2C and the emphasis will be=
on
practical information that participants can take back to their countrie=
s and
use to advocate for increased access to medicines=2E
M=E9decins Sans Fronti=E8res is an international medical organisation w=
orking in
more than 80 countries worldwide=2E In 1999=2C MSF launched its Access =
to
Essential Medicines Campaign=2C which is aimed at stimulating research =
and
development for neglected diseases=2C overcoming barriers to access=2C =
and
humanizing international trade agreements=2E
The Treatment Action Campaign works for access to affordable and qualit=
y
treatment for all people with HIV=2FAIDS in South Africa and supports t=
he
global campaign for access to essential and life-saving drugs=2E All th=

trade unions federations=2C religious bodies=2C the NGO coalition and c=
