Examining the Safety of Electronic Personal Health Records
According to an article in this week?s BMJ, more research must=20
be=A0carried out before there is=A0proof that electronic personal health=20=
records are safe and effective,
NHS HealthSpace is a secure online personal health organiser available=20=
to all patients in England. Patients will in the future be able to=20
access their NHS Summary Care Record via HealthSpace, making it the=20
world?s first fully national example of ePHR.
The authors say that this technology has many benefits, including=20
empowering patients through enhanced information and shared decision=20
making; increasing patient safety through exposing record errors;=20
reducing unnecessary consultations; and overcoming geographical=20
boundaries to patient care.
However, challenges still exist over security and standardising the=20
different systems, they warn, and health professionals and patients=20
should be involved at all stages of design, development and=20
implementation of the technology.
