Here's what I think: Practice Fusion, a vendor of electronic health records,=
will give EHRs to doctors who are willing to violate the Hippocratic Oath a=
nd state laws and allow Patient Fusion to aggregate and sell their patients=
=E2=80=99 sensitive electronic medical records. It is important to know that=
it is impossible to =E2=80=9Cde-identify=E2=80=9D electronic health records=
. Also, consumers still have the legal right to decide whether or not to par=
ticipate in research, and especially want to decide on whether to participat=
e in =E2=80=9Cresearch=E2=80=9D by drug companies.

Soon there will be a way for physician practices to have electronic health r=
ecords at no cost, according to Ryan Howard, CEO of Practice Fusion, Inc. ,=20=
a San Francisco-based company launched last August.=20
Practice Fusion is poised to announce that it will offer a free, =E2=80=9Cco=
mpletely hosted, community-based model=E2=80=9D of online access to EHRs, to=
be subsidized by the selling of de-identified data to insurance groups, cli=
nical researchers and pharmaceutical companies, Howard said.=20

A key benefit to Practice Fusion=E2=80=99s product will be automatic synchro=
nization, Howard explained. A patient=E2=80=99s records, which will be acces=
sible online by several doctors simultaneously, will be maintained by the we=
b-based host and continually updated in a central location. Howard claims th=
at there will be virtually no start-up cost or inconvenience.=20
=E2=80=9CWe=E2=80=99ve eliminated the typical two years needed for implement=
ation of hardware and databases, and the need for consultants,=E2=80=9D Howa=

ssociation recommended increased transparency and public awareness about the=

According to Jodi Daniel, director of the Office of Policy and Research at t=

oordinator for Health Information, state privacy laws currently supersede fe=
deral privacy laws, making a national healthcare privacy law impossible.=20
