*** House Subcommittee Advances Amended Healthcare IT Bill ***

Last week, the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health
approved a bill (HR 4157) to promote the use of healthcare IT. The
legislation, sponsored by Reps. Nancy Johnson (R-CT) and Nathan Deal
(R-GA), establishes a three-year timeline for HHS' Office of the
National Coordinator for Health IT to assess and endorse
interoperability guidelines. In addition, like an IT bill before the
Senate, it protects state information privacy laws that are more
stringent than HIPAA. The bill does not establish a deadline for
providers to convert to ICD-10 billing codes nor provide money for
providers to adopt new technology.
