Leaders of the NHS information technology (IT) programme said last week=20=

that they will stick to a controversial policy on patients=92 consent.=20=

The policy will require that patients who do not want their data on the=20=

new system to be shared to actively opt out.

Mike Pringle, one of the programme=92s clinical leads, said last week=20
that the alternative =93opt in=94 policy proposed by the BMA=92s General=20=

Practitioners Committee would jeopardise the quality of care.

However, in response to concerns about confidentiality the leaders have=20=

promised to make two changes to the way the scheme=92s central systems=20=

handle information on patients.

The programme is a third of the way through a 10 year scheme to create=20=

a system of shared electronic health records in England....=20=
