CPATH responded today to a call by the US Trade Representative in the
Federal Register for public comments on a new round of trade
negotiations for the United States-Trans-Pacific Partnership Trade Agreement.

Reflecting a public health perspective, CPATH's comments included an
assessment of previous FTAs with Australia, Chile, Peru, and
Singapore in terms of Public Health Objectives for Global Trade, a
set of objectives that would promote and protect health and
sustainable economic development. To ensure that the injuries to
public health are not perpetuated by this new round of trade
negotiations, CPATH recommended robust objectives for the TPP Trade
Agreement negotiations intended to safeguard the health of Americans
and our trading partners, and to promote economically and socially
just, democratically controlled, and environmentally sustainable
outcomes. These objectives emphasize the importance of having public
health representation on trade advisory committees. (CPATH's
comments are attached)

Initial TPP negotiating partners include Australia, Brunei
Darussalam, Chile, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam, with the
objective of including additional countries throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
