In a world where medical advances have produced substantial gains in life=

expectancy and quality of life for so many in rich countries, still one in=

three people around the world don=E2=80=99t have access to the medicines th=
ey need=0D
to fight poverty-related diseases. There is an urgent need to develop and=
=0D
support policies that will improve access to existing medicines and=0D
stimulate the research and development of better medical tools for people=
=0D
in poor countries suffering from poverty-related diseases. When diseases=0D
are fought wisely and widely, we can contain drug resistance, facilitate=0D
sustainable development, stimulate economic growth, ensure greater global=
=0D
public health security, and save human lives.=0D

The Working Group on Innovation, Access to Medicines and Poverty Related=0D
Diseases, is being established to serve as a discussion forum with Members=
=0D
of the European Parliament, the European Commission and civil society so=0D
as to better integrate the European Union=E2=80=99s response on health rela=
ted=0D
issues, specifically on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other=0D
neglected diseases, as well as to ensure coherent policies on these=0D
topics.=0D
=0D
The Working Group has the pleasure of inviting you to its inauguration.=0D

On this occasion, the Chair of the Working Group, the MEP David Martin,=0D
M=C3=A9decins Sans Fronti=C3=A8res=E2=80=99 Access to Essential Medicines C=
ampaign and=0D
Global Health Advocates will give presentations setting out the aims,=0D
activities and immediate challenges ahead for the Working Group.=0D
