Sign of the times? This notice just came to me from the Foundation Center.
The corporate sector and associated PR firms have been holding pricey
(and sometimes semi-secret) seminars on how to court and/or infiltrate
patient groups and other NGOs for quite some time, but this is the first
time I've seen the opposite. But corporate funding has become so
normalized that it's accepted without question in many if most quarters
of the NGO world, especially in the health field. Note also the how the
word "partnership" has been redefined , now so frequently used to refer
to any relationship , while its real meaning is an active relationship
between equals.
BTW, in US healthcare reform, disclosure of industry funding of patient
and disease groups failed to be included among the Sunshine requirements
of both House & Senate versions, and in the latest proposal from the
President. ( see Title VI, Transparency and Program Integrity at
www.whitehouse.gov). On the positive side disclosures of payments to
healthcare and providers and hospitals would be required.
