SCHOOL ON TRADE AND PUBLIC HEALTH
Organized by
Centre for Trade and Development (Centad), New Delhi
&
Center for WTO Studies, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi

The interface of trade policies and public health has been a subject
of wide ranging debates especially during the last several years.
While most of these debates have mainly focused on the TRIPS
Agreement, the impact of trade polices under GATS, SPS and TBT
agreements within the WTO-GATT regime cannot be overlooked.
Considering the recent developments in norm-setting activities at
various multilateral and bilateral forums, there is an urgent need to
develop a holistic understanding of the impact of global trade regime
on public health in developing countries. Towards this objective
Centre for Trade and Development (Centad), in collaboration with
Centre for WTO Studies-Indian Institute Foreign Trade (IIFT), New
Delhi is organising a School on Trade and Public Health from 5th =E2=80=93 =
9th
October 2009, to:
=EF=81=B6=09Address a range of issues and develop a holistic understanding =
on
how the global trade regime impacts public health
=EF=81=B6=09Develop an understanding of how trade impacts access to health
services, medicines and medical technology
=EF=81=B6=09Elucidate the relationship between the multilateral trade regim=
e and
international institutions setting substantive health and IPR
standards
=EF=81=B6=09Examine how regional and bilateral trade agreements impact publ=
ic health
=EF=81=B6=09Examine how the pharmaceutical innovation ecosystem operates an=
d its
relationship with IPRs
=EF=81=B6=09Examine the accountability mechanisms in the global regimes on =
trade
and public health

Application:
Post-graduate/Advanced Programs (M.Phil/Ph.D) candidates from any
university/institution based in India in Law, Social Medicine/Public
Health, Journalism, Social Work, Economics, Political Science and
Development Studies are invited to apply. There are openings for
approximately 20 students to participate in the summer school. Civil
Society Organisations  based out of New Delhi are also eligible to
apply.
The application form must be complete in all respects, (the
application form can be downloaded from www.centad.org or
http://wtocentre.iift.ac.in/), along with an up-to-date curriculum
vitae, which must reflect an active interest in Public health evident
through publications/ practical work. The candidate must also attach a
statement of purpose of around 1000 words along with the application
form, describing current scholarly interests, previous research, and
also propose how the school would specifically further these interests
and plans. The application should be sent to stph@centad.org on or
before 29th September 2009. Candidates selected for the school will be
intimated by 30th September 2009. Late entries will not be
entertained.
Fees/Boarding and Lodging/Travel
*There is no course fee
*Boarding and Lodging for outstation candidates will be arranged by
the organisers
*Reimbursement of AC III tier return train tickets for round the trip
will be provided by the organisers
*Candidates are expected to arrive in New Delhi on the 4th of October
2009. Accommodation shall be provided until the afternoon of 10th
October 2009.
*Candidates based in New Delhi are not entitled for any local
conveyance allowance and accommodation.
*The school will be held at IIFT campus, New Delhi
