Centre To Extend Incentives For Drug Exporters
Thursday November 26, 2009 05:30:00 EST
(RTTNews) - The Centre is likely to extend incentives to drug-exporters
for shipments to Africa and Latin America through routes other than that
of Europe. It is also preparing to pull the European Union or EU to the
World Trade Organization or WTO over seizures of consignments of Indian
pharma companies, say media reports.
The EU has been seizing Indian generic drugs en route Latin America and
Africa, citing patent violations.
The Department of Pharmaceuticals has submitted a freight- subsidy
scheme meant for exporters to the Commerce Ministry, so that they could
take other routes and avoid transit through Europe, which is a shorter
route with better connectivity.
Department of Pharmaceuticals Secretary Ashok Kumar, on the sidelines of
an FICCI function in New Delhi, said on Wednesday that the Ministry of
Commerce had agreed to the proposal and hoped for its implementation. He
added that the government would be taking up the issue of Indian
generics drugs seizure by the EU at the WTO.
Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance Secretary General, D.G. Shah said: "India
should assert the right to free trade and right to passage as per the
WTO free trade norms."
