International agreement to tackle counterfeits

An international agreement that aims to criminalise the marketing of
counterfeit medicines via the internet is being prepared by the Council
of Europe <http://www.coe.int/> .

The draft convention would oblige member states to criminalise the
manufacture, supply, offer to supply and trafficking of counterfeit
medicines as well as the falsification of documents, and similar crimes
involving threats to public health.

The agreement, which could be open for participation by non-member
states, is expected to open for signature in 2010 after its formal
adoption.
