Pfizer Expands Its Generics Portfolio Through Innovative Licensing
Deals, Increasing Access To Medicines For Billions Worldwide
dateline:
NEW YORK
Pfizer Inc announced today that it has entered into licensing agreements w=
ith two pharmaceutical companies based in India, strengthening its positio=
n in emerging markets and significantly expanding its portfolio of medicin=
es in its Established Products Business Unit.

Off-patent medicines, including branded generics, represent one of the fas=
test growth segments in the global pharmaceutical market. This is especial=
ly true in emerging markets where costs and access are primary drivers of =
off-patent medicine growth.

=E2=80=9CToday=E2=80=99s announcement demonstrates Pfizer=E2=80=99s commitm=
ent to improving the global public health landscape by making needed quali=
ty medicines - in a range of disease areas - accessible to underserved pop=
ulations worldwide,=E2=80=9D said Jeff Kindler, chairman and CEO of Pfizer=
. =E2=80=9CThe off-patent marketplace worldwide too often suffers from qua=
lity and supply reliability issues. With our broad established medicines =
portfolio and our world-class manufacturing capabilities, Pfizer is in an =
ideal position to supply high-quality medicines at affordable prices to pe=
ople around the world.=E2=80=9D

Emerging Markets: Reaching New Patients
Pfizer=E2=80=99s expanded agreements with Aurobindo Pharma Ltd. will grow i=
ts product portfolio within emerging markets to reflect the diverse and o=
ften unique market dynamics and commercial interests of more than 70 count=
ries.

=E2=80=9CThis deal illustrates the types of innovative partnerships which w=
ill help to advance Pfizer=E2=80=99s presence in developing markets and en=
hance access to needed medicines for billions worldwide,=E2=80=9D said Jea=
n-Michel Halfon, president and general manager of Pfizer=E2=80=99s Emergin=
g Markets Business Unit. =E2=80=9CThe expansion of our product portfolio f=
rom this deal provides a foundation for us to commercialize branded generi=
cs based on patient needs within specific regions.=E2=80=9D

Under the terms of the agreement, Pfizer has acquired rights to 55 solid o=
ral dose products and 5 sterile injectable products for patients in more t=
han 70 emerging market countries. These medicines include antibiotics and =
anti-infectives, and cover a broad range of disease areas like cardiovascu=
lar and central nervous system disorders. Pfizer will commercialize the 60=
products in phases tailoring its approach for different regions. Financia=
l terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Developed Markets: Expanding Generic Offerings
Pfizer entered into agreements with Claris Lifesciences Ltd. (=E2=80=9CClar=
is=E2=80=9D) to commercialize sterile injectable medicines after the produ=
cts are no longer patent protected, and have lost market exclusivity in No=
rth America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The Claris agreements adv=
ance Pfizer=E2=80=99s Established Products strategy, which focuses on the =
commercialization of products where market exclusivity has been lost. Pfiz=
er=E2=80=99s global annual sales of established products are approximately =
 $10 billion.

Under the terms of the agreements, Pfizer has acquired rights to 15 inject=
able products covering a broad range of therapeutic areas including anti-i=
nfectives and pain. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

=E2=80=9CThese agreements advance our goals to expand our steriles portfoli=
o and provide hospitals and patients with a wide offering of affordable m=
edicines they can trust. Pfizer=E2=80=99s reputation for high quality and =
supply reliability is unrivaled in the industry, and this is critical in t=
he area of sterile injectables,=E2=80=9D said David Simmons, president and =
general manager of Pfizer=E2=80=99s Established Products Business Unit.
Pfizer also expanded agreements with Aurobindo in developed markets, addin=
g products in the US and Europe.
To date, 128 non-Pfizer products - 98 solid oral dose and 30 sterile injec=
tables =E2=80=93 have been added to the Company=E2=80=99s existing diversif=
ied portfolio of established brands.
