South-to-South Cooperation as a Panel Discussion at IAS 2009

Satellite event organized by ABIA will present cases from Brazil, China,
Thailand, Colombia and India

On the 19th of July in Cape Town, South Africa, the Brazilian
Interdisciplinary AIDS Association (ABIA) will host panel on =93Intellectua=
l
Property and Access to Antiretroviral Medications: Opportunities for
South-to-South Cooperation.=94  This satellite event, which is part of the =
5th
Conference on Pathogens, Treatment and Prevention of the International AIDS
Society (IAS), intends to contribute to the debate on issues related to
intellectual property and access to medications for AIDS.  In Cape Town, th=
e
debate will present case analyses that demonstrate how the organized civil
societies of Brazil, Colombia, China, India and Thailand are mobilizing
themselves not only to maintain antiretroviral treatment, but also to acces=
s
new medications.

The event will incorporate presentations from representatives of IFARMA
Colombia, ABIA Brazil, MSF Thailand, and MSF China.  During the panel
discussion ABIA will also launch a supplemental publication that includes
the case studies presented during the event.  The objective of the debate
and the publication is to facilitate joint civil society undertakings that
aim to guarantee universal access to antiretroviral medication for people
living with HIV/AIDS.

This is the 5th Conference on Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention which
is organized by the International AIDS Society (IAS)  At the 5th Conference=

the organizers estimate that around 5000 people will be present.
Predominantly scientifically oriented, the conferences have shed light on
the most recent research related to prevention and treatment on HIV/AIDS.
