Dear Jamie,

Those who followed the debate over CAFTA and the Costa Rican referendum
probably know the kind of arm-twisting that went on, as well as the
fear-based campaign for CAFTA. I am attaching a recent article by the
ex-Vice President of Costa Rica on Free Trade. However, for historical
record, I am also attaching the Memorandum that surfaced during the campaig=
n
for CAFTA, written by the same author.

Best,

Roman Macaya

Subject: [Ip-health] 2008 UAEM National Conference, October 17-19

How about this?

Dear Friends,

I am very happy to announce that the 2008 conference of Universities Allied
for Essential Medicines will be held Friday, October 17 - Sunday, October 1=
9
at University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley, CA. You can register
here: http://www.essentialmedicine.org/fall-conference/register/.

As with previous years, this year's conference will include a range of topi=
c
trainings, chapter strategy sessions and advocacy workshops. Emphasis will
be placed on facilitating best-practice sharing between chapters of varying
experience levels and ensuring that each chapter and member has an
opportunity to strategize on what they'd like to accomplish on their campus
this year. The training will be facilitated by our friends at Americans fo=
r
Informed Democracy who are sponsoring the training sessions.

AID has done a fantastic job of supporting two UAEM campaigns. Last year,
AID provided support and training to UAEM's University of Florida chapter
which led to significant movement in their work. This year, AID is working
with the UAEM's California chapters to advance their campaign to get the
University of California system to implement humanitarian licensing
policies.

On Saturday night, everyone will have the chance to rock out to the tunes o=
f
Peter Maybarduk. If you haven't seen Peter perform, you should know that
the show alone is worth the trip to the concert. This year's follow up to
the Party for the Public Domain at the 2007 conference will be phenomenal.

We are very excited to have Stephen Lewis, former Special Envoy for HIV/AID=
S
in Africa and co-founder of AIDS-Free World as our keynote speaker this
year. Stephen Lewis is an amazing advocate and very excited to be
participating in the conference. You can read his full biography here:
http://www.aids-freeworld.org/content/view/87/168/.

To register for the conference, please visit
http://www.essentialmedicine.org/fall-conference/register/.

Following submission of the registration form, you will receive an
email notification regarding the amount UAEM will be able to reimburse
you for travel. Since travel assistance is limited, early
registration is encouraged. Everyone is strongly encouraged to find
funding from his/her university in order to maximize the number of
conference attendees we can support. The web site also has tips on looking
for funding from your school and a sample application.

The Berkeley chapter is working hard to find student hosts for all
participants, but please feel free to explore alternative options for
accommodations.

The conference is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about access
to medicines issues. If you have any questions about the conference, they
can be sent to conference2008@essentialmedicine.org.

Hope to see you in Berkeley!

Battle in Seattle (http://www.battleinseattlemovie.com), about the 1999
WTO meeting in Seattle, brings issues such as access to essential
medicines, labor, and the environment to a broader audience. It will be
showing for a limited time (next 3 weeks from Friday September 19 to
October 16) and if there is interest it could gain a wider distribution.

For screening times and locations in your area see:
