During the recent World Health Assembly, Health Action International
(HAI) and the World Health Organization launched the second edition of
their manual entitled Measuring medicine prices, availability,
affordability and price components.

Since launching the first edition in 2003, over 50 surveys have been
conducted generating reliable information on the price, availability and
affordability of medicines across sectors in many countries. The second
edition of the manual incorporates the wealth of practical experience
gained by survey teams.

Key changes to the methodology, new features in the manual and automated
workbook, and new resources in the accompanying CDROM, are listed on
HAI's website (www.haiweb.org/medicineprices
<http://www.haiweb.org/medicineprices> ).

You can download all survey documents from the website (note: the manual
and workbook are large files). Alternatively, order a copy of the new
manual from WHO by emailing edmdoccentre@who.int
<mailto:edmdoccentre@who.int> (no charge).

The results from 50 surveys can also be accessed on the site -
http://www.haiweb.org/GlobalDatabase/Main.htm

A new issue of the project's bulletin Medicine Pricing Matters can also
be downloaded from HAI's website. This issue includes brief articles on
the opposition to the introduction of pro-generics policies in Sri
Lanka, key findings from a study of the anti-malarials market in Uganda,
and call's in Jordan to abolish taxes on medicines. The lead article
outlines the development of guidelines on policy options to lower prices
and improve access to treatment. This work is being undertaken by WHO,
HAI and a group of pricing experts.
