The emerging market was once viewed by the pharmaceutical industry through
the lens of patent infringement and corporate philanthropy, but has steadily
become seen as a place of innovation as well as an opportunity to impact in
a sustainable fashion some of the world's largest health crises. Research
and development centers are increasingly outsourced to the emerging market,
and it is estimated that 15% of clinical trials will take place in India by
2011. Global revenue in rapidly growing emerging markets is creating strong
revenue channels. At the same time, the pharmaceutical industry is
increasingly vested in being a partner in tackling diseases that plague
emerging markets by investing in local capacity building. Given this
globalized marketplace, what are the strategic priorities when it comes to
emerging markets? How do they fit into the overall growth models for this
sector? Join Robert Mallett and Rick Edmunds in discussing these issues and
more.
Mr. Robert L. Mallett is Senior Vice President for Worldwide Policy and
Public Affairs and President of the Pfizer Foundation. He directs Pfizer's
global policy and industry economics group, philanthropy and corporate
giving department. He is also an elected officer of the corporation. Prior
to joining Pfizer in April 2001, Mr. Mallett served as a visiting professor
at Harvard's JFK School of Government and served in the Clinton
Administration as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce. He is
an attorney and has been a partner and associate in law firms in Washington,
D.C., as well as having served as legal counsel to former United States
Senator Lloyd Bentsen. Mr. Mallett is a member of the Council on Foreign
Relations, an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Public
Administrators, Chairman of the U.S.-South Africa Business Council, and a
member of the Board of Directors of Medical Education of South African
Blacks (MESAB). Mr. Mallett is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse
College (1979) and received his law degree from Harvard University in 1982,
where he was Projects Editor of the Harvard Civil Right-Civil Liberties Law
Review. He resides in New York City.
