AAAS Science and Human Rights Program[1]
Dear Colleagues:
Re: Launch of the AAAS Science and Human Rights Coalition, January 14-16, 2009
It is with great pleasure that I write to invite you to the upcoming launch of
the AAAS Science and Human Rights Coalition.
As you know, over the past year, the AAAS Science and Human Rights Program has
collaborated with scientific associations and professional societies to lay
the foundations of the Coalition a network of scientific associations,
professional societies, and science academies that recognize that science and
scientists are vital to the realization of human rights. The launch will
highlight the contribution scientists have made to human rights and affirm our
commitment to doing more moving forward.
On the evening of January 14th, the launch will be opened by Dr. Alan Leshner
and three distinguished speakers, including Mary Robinson, former United
Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and former President of Ireland,
and Sidney Verba, Chair of the Committee on Human Rights of the National
Academy of Sciences, and Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor Emeritus and
Research Professor of Government at Harvard University. The following
day-and-a-half will be devoted to paving the way forward and will include
presentations, workshops, and planning meetings to prepare the Coalition to
contribute to the growing efforts to make human rights a reality for all.
I very much hope you will join us to launch this important initiative. You
may register to attend online at: http://shr.aaas.org/coalition/index.shtml[2].
There is no charge for participation. Please note, however, that we are
unable to cover travel costs. Because of the timing of the event so close to
the inauguration of the new President, we encourage you to make your hotel
reservations early.
I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. You can contact me by
email at: myounis@aaas.org[3].
Yours Sincerely,
(image)
