Dear friends and colleagues,
3D -> Trade =96 Human Rights =96 Equitable Economy is pleased to invite you=
to
participate in a panel discussion exploring the links between Access to
Knowledge (A2K) and Human Rights (HR).
Access to knowledge (A2K) is essential for promoting human rights, economic
and cultural development, innovation, individual freedom and creativity.
The Third Access to Knowledge conference (A2K3) will bring together
scholars, policymakers, industry, and civil society to discuss key issues i=
n
global knowledge policy.

s
FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
On Monday 8 September, opening day of the largest-yet A2K Conference, 3D
will convene a panel of experts from around the globe to explore how new
technological and legal developments (particularly in the field of
intellectual property) can impact the enjoyment of human rights such as the
rights to food, health, education and participation in cultural life.
With input from audience members like you, the session will help develop
strategies to equip the growing A2K movement with human rights frameworks,
mechanisms and tools. Joining forces and sharing their experiences,
advocates, academics and policymakers will benefit from the synergies
between improving access to knowledge and protecting, promoting and
fulfilling human rights.
The panel will address these and other challenges questions, including:
* How do copyright rules block schools from buying textbooks or
translating them into local languages? And how does this
affect the right to education?
* In what ways are patented seeds owned by corporations
straining farmers=92 budgets and dismantling traditional practices
of seed exchange? And how does this practice endanger the right to
participate in cultural life?
* Which human rights mechanisms can be used to redress A2K
shortcomings that constitute human rights violations?
3D looks forward to an enlightening discussion on these complex issues and
welcomes your contribution. The A2K3 Conference has been scheduled in sync
with the Human Rights Council=92s session to facilitate participation of
members of the Human Rights community, and we hope that you will take
advantage of this opportunity to bring your ideas to the table.
3D=92s panel, A2K and Human Rights
