FYI, from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. sounds like they
focusing on scientific aspects of drug development, but certainly funding
for this research would need to be on the agenda. Given the track record &
significance of development , economics, and access to cancer drugs, those
interested should contact ASCO directly.

A postgraduate workshop for clinical and translational investigations focused
on strategic planning to develop and validate new anticancer and cancer
prevention agents and pathways. An intensive and interactive workshop in how
to design effective strategies - from clinical trial initiative, to enabling
trials, to pivotal efficacy trials - to develop new anticancer and prevention
agents, taught by a distinguished faculty from across the academic, industry,

Oncology scientists with clinical trial experience and an interest in
new approaches to developing or enhancing agents for the diagnosis,
treatment, and prevention of cancer are invited to attend the 2007
Accelerating Anticancer Agent Development and Validation Workshop. ASCO
is co-sponsoring this event with the American Association for Cancer
Research (AACR), the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, the National
Cancer Institute (NCI), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA). The workshop will be held in Bethesda, Maryland, at the Bethesda
North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, on June 20-22.
The workshop is designed to bring together leaders in clinical and
translational cancer research from academia, industry, NCI, and FDA to assist
investigators in understanding and improving the process of cancer drug
development. Because the course capacity will be restricted, the event will
offer an intimate atmosphere in which participants can bring an agent or
strategy with promising early-stage clinical data for discussion. An FDA
representative, a biostatistician, and an academic/industrial clinical
investigator will be assigned to each small group to discuss development
strategies, including potential pitfalls and potential acceptability of the
evidence produced to support a new drug application. These small group
sessions will be supplemented with lectures, roundtable breakout sessions, and
a One-on-One with the Faculty session.
Applicants should have at least four years of research experience in cancer
drug development-in an academic, industry, or government agency setting-and
previous clinical trial experience as a study principal investigator,
co-investigator, or participating physician at an approved site. Academic
participants should be at the assistant professor level (postdoctoral students
and fellows are not eligible) and should have prior or current external,
independent funding in support of their research. Industry participants must
hold a position on a drug development team. Applicants must supply
verification from a supervisor or department/division head that the minimum
course requirements have been met and institutional/corporate approval to
participate in the workshop has been granted.
As the number of workshop participants will be limited, early enrollment is
encouraged. Registration will be closed when course capacity has been reached.
Only online applications will be accepted.
More information about the 2007 Accelerating Anticancer Agent Development and
Validation Workshop - including a program schedule, faculty list, and logistic
details - is available online.
