Staff Attorney
Prescription Access Litigation
POSITION SUMMARY
Prescription Access Litigation (PAL) works to end illegal pharmaceutical
industry practices that raise the cost of prescription drugs, using class
action litigation and public education. PAL is a nationwide coalition of m=
ore
than 125 organizations, including consumer, senior citizen, heath care, lab=
or,
legal services, and women's health advocacy organizations in 36 states and =
the
District of Columbia. The Staff Attorney assists in PALs day-to-day
operations and coordinates the coalition.
SUPERVISION
The Staff Attorney reports to the PAL Director, and supervises legal intern=
s.
Responsibilities:
The Staff Attorney works with the PAL Director in the overall planning, pol=
icy
decisions and operations of PAL. In addition, the Staff Attorney has the
following specific responsibilities:
Case Coordination
=B7 Review case pleadings, motions, settlements and other legal docum=
ents.
=B7 Develop fact sheets, outreach flyers and related materials about
cases.
=B7 Lead outreach efforts on new cases, both to organizations and
individuals.
=B7 Provide guidance and feedback to plaintiffs in course of litigati=
on.
=B7 Provide regular information to plaintiffs on status of litigation=
.
Coordinating PAL Coalition
=B7 Serve as the bridge between PAL coalition members and private
attorneys.
=B7 Recruit new local, state-based and national organizations to join=
the
PAL coalition.
=B7 Contribute content to PAL publications, including PAL website.
=B7 Build and maintain communication systems between and among PAL
coalition members.
=B7 Oversee maintenance of member and litigation databases.
=B7 Help coalition members use their participation in PAL to strength=
en
their other prescription drug advocacy work.
Other Responsibilities
=B7 Represent the project at conferences, meetings and presentations =
to
potential PAL coalition members.
=B7 Assist with media outreach.
=B7 Attend relevant court proceedings.
=B7 Participate in PAL team meetings, conference calls with PAL attor=
neys
and other organizational meetings.
=B7 Assist with writing and editing of funding proposals, grant repor=
ts
and fundraising outreach.
=B7 Lead the hiring and supervision of legal interns.
=B7 Occasional out-of-state travel.
QUALIFICATIONS
=B7 JD and at least three years of relevant experience required.
=B7 Strong interpersonal and communications skills; ability to establ=
ish
and maintain relationships with national and state non-profit organizations=
,
private bar attorneys and other collaborators.
=B7 Knowledge of health care system or consumer protection required;
familiarity with pharmaceutical industry and/or prescription drug policy a
plus.
=B7 Commitment to social justice.
=B7 Experience with and/or interest in public interest litigation.
Familiarity with patent, antitrust, class action and/or consumer protection
law a plus.
=B7 Well-developed writing and analytical skills. Ability to write fo=
r
both legal and lay audiences, and to translate complex legal and health car=
e
concepts into understandable language.
=B7 Able to juggle multiple tasks at once and meet tight deadlines.
=B7 Strong proficiency with standard software including word processi=
ng,
spreadsheet, presentation and databases, and Internet research (including
Westlaw, Lexis, etc.).
=B7 Community organizing and/or coalition building experience a stron=
g
plus.
=B7 Bilingual/bicultural background a plus.
