The Thai Network of People living with HIV/AIDS and
Act Up-Paris Abbott Blockade against Thailand: people
with HIV/AIDS invite CEO to  crisis resolution meeting

Today July 13 2007, The Thai Network of People living
with HIV/AIDS and  Act Up-Paris have invited Abbott
Laboratories CEO Miles White to a  conciliation
meeting with a representative of the Thai government,
during the International AIDS Conference in Sydney, on
July 23 2007. This meeting  aims to offer the drug
company an opportunity to get out of the crisis in
which it has dug itself since announcing a blockade of
lifesaving medicines against the Thais, followed by a
lawsuit against people with HIV for organizing an
internet protest.

On February 14, Abbott announced that, until the Thai
government grants Abbott a long-term monopoly on sales
of the lifesaving HIV medicine  Aluvia, Abbott was
effecting an immediate blockade on the distribution of
this lifesaving drug to all HIV/AIDS patients in
Thailand.

On May 23, Abbott Laboratories, a 22.5 billion dollar
company, announced having hired the world=B9s biggest
law firm, Baker &
McKenzie, to sue the  HIV patient group Act Up-Paris,
for having organized an international internet
demonstration on the website of Abbott, in protest
against the drug company=B9s blockade of lifesaving
medication in Thailand.

As financial and mass media have reported on the
disastrous impact that the Abbott blockade is having
on the lives of impoverished
Thais struggling with the AIDS virus (see Reuters
story of May 22), these actions by Abbott Laboratories
have snowballed into a public relations crisis which
is  further staining the reputation of the entire
patent-based pharmaceutical industry (see comments by
GlaxoSmithKline in Wall Street Journal of June 18).

Act Up-Paris has tried discussing the need for the
immediate removal of  the Abbott blockade against Thai
patients with Abbott
Public Relations Director Dirk Van Eeden, only to come
to the conclusion that Mr Van Eeden is  already very
well aware of the public relations disaster which
these decisions  are proving to be for Abbott, and
that only CEO Miles White himself has the authority to
overrule his own decision to withhold lifesaving HIV
medicine from sick HIV/AIDS patients in Thailand.

That is why the Thai Network of People living with
HIV/AIDS and Act
 Up-Paris are kindly calling upon the Abbott CEO to
publicly confirm his  willingness to participate in
person in a conciliation meeting with a
 representative of the Thai government on July 23rd at
the International
AIDS Conference in Sydney, in order to finally arrive
at a dignified
resolution of this  crisis which is an embarrassment
to all stakeholders in the global fight against AIDS.

Blocus d_Abbott contre la Tha=EFlande : les malades du
sida invitent le PDG =E0 une r=E9union de sortie de crise

Aujourd_hui, vendredi 13 juillet, le R=E9seau
Tha=EFlandais des
 S=E9ropositifs et Act Up-Paris ont invit=E9 le PDG des
laboratoires Abbott, Miles White, =E0 une r=E9union de
conciliation avec un repr=E9sentant du gouvernement tha=EF
le 23
juillet 2007, en marge de la conf=E9rence mondiale sur
le sida qui se  tient =E0 Sydney. Cette rencontre
offrira au laboratoire une occasion de sortir de la
crise dans laquelle il s_est enferr=E9 depuis qu_il a
annonc=E9 contre les malades tha=EFlandais le blocus d_un
m=E9dicament anti-sida vital, puis une action financi=E8re
en justice contre l_association de malades fran=E7ais
qui a organis=E9 l_action internet de protestation
anti-Abbott du 26 avril.

Le 14 f=E9vrier 2007, Abbott avait annonc=E9 que, jusqu_=E0
ce que le  gouvernement Thai ne lui garantisse un
monopole de long terme sur les ventes de
l_antir=E9troviral Aluvia, Abbott proc=E9derait =E0 un
blocus imm=E9diat sur la distribution de ce m=E9dicament
vital pour tous les malades du sida tha=EFlandais.

Le 23 mai, Abbott, qui p=E8se 22 milliards de dollars de
Chiffre d_affaires, a annonc=E9 avoir embauch=E9 le plus
grand cabinet d_avocats du monde, Baker&McKenzie, pour
tra=EEner en justice l_association de malades Act
Up-Paris, au titre de la cyber-manifestation
internationale organis=E9e le 26
avril sur le site web d=92Abbott en protestation contre
la privation d_Aluvia perp=E9tr=E9e par Abbott contre les
tha=EFlandais.

Le blocus d_Abbott a d=E9j=E0 des cons=E9quences terribles
sur la vie des malades tha=EFlandais, et de nombreux
m=E9dias grand public et financier commencent =E0 en
parler (voir par exemple l_article de Reuters du 22
mai). Pour Abbott, ces repr=E9sailles contre les malades
du sida tha=EFlandais et fran=E7ais se transforment
maintenant en un d=E9sastre de relations publiques, qui
a pour r=E9sultat d'entacher davantage encore la
r=E9putation de l_industrie pharmaceutique dans son
ensemble (voir les commentaires de GlaxoSmithKline
dans le Wall Street Journal du 18 juin).

Apr=E8s avoir abord=E9 avec le directeur des relations
publiques des laboratoires Abbott, M. Dirk Van Eeden,
la n=E9cessit=E9 d=92une lev=E9e imm=E9diate du blocus contre
les malades thailandais, Act Up-Paris a pu constater
que M. Van Eeden est parfaitement conscient des effets
d=E9sastreux que ces agissements causent =E0 l_image du
laboratoire, mais que seul le PDG, M. Miles White,
poss=E8de l_autorit=E9 n=E9cessaire pour revenir sur sa
d=E9cision de priver les malades tha=EFlandais du sida de
m=E9dicaments vitaux.

C=92est pourquoi le R=E9seau Tha=EFlandais des S=E9ropositifs
et Act Up-Paris appellent le PDG d_Abbott =E0 confirmer
publiquement sa disposition =E0 participer, le 23
juillet prochain durant la conf=E9rence mondiale sur le
sida, =E0 une r=E9union de conciliation avec un
repr=E9sentant du gouvernement tha=EFlandais, dans le but
parvenir =E0 une solution honorable pour sortir de la
crise actuelle, qui indigne profond=E9ment tous les
acteurs de la lutte mondiale contre le sida.
