Dear Reader,
In the August issue <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/8/en/index.html=
> of the Bulletin, Frank Baiden et al. call on countries to apply a new se=
t of international verbal autopsy standards <http://www.who.int/bulletin/vo=
lumes/85/8/07-043745/en/index.html> to meet health system information need=
s. Jack Radisch looks into the growing need for medicines to combat neglect=
ed and emerging infectious diseases <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85=
/8/07-045690/en/index.html> . Meanwhile, Michel Thieren and Alexandre Mauro=
n use the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Nuremberg code on medical =
ethics <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/8/07-045443/en/index.html> =
to assess its current relevance.
Theresa Braine investigates the novel new health institute <http://www.who.=
int/bulletin/volumes/85/8/07-010807/en/index.html> founded by Mexican bill=
ionaire Carlos Slim Hel=FA that both researches and funds interventions in =
Latin America. Rupa Chinai reports from India on the pilot project addressi=
ng the high prevalence of mental health disorders in Goa <http://www.who.in=
t/bulletin/volumes/85/8/07-020807/en/index.html> . In this month's intervie=
w, Francisco Songane, director of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & C=
hild Health, advocates for the integration of maternal, newborn and child h=
ealth <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/8/07-100807/en/index.html> i=
n overall national health plans.
Julia Kemp et al. set out to assess the patient and household costs <http:/=
/www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/8/06-033167/en/index.html> of tuberculosi=
s (TB) diagnosis in urban Malawi. Jay K Varma et al. discuss results of the=
trialling <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/8/06-038067/en/index.htm=
l> of the New Global Plan to Stop TB in four Thai provinces in 2004-05. In=
Eritrea, Mineab Sebhatu et al. use a new low-cost approach <http://www.who=
.int/bulletin/volumes/85/8/06-038604/en/index.html> to estimate TB inciden=
ce. Peter S Hill and Mao Tan Eang look at the tensions Cambodia faced in im=
plementing TB control <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/8/06-036822/e=
n/index.html> while rebuilding its health system.
Implementing TB programmes in complex emergencies <http://www.who.int/bulle=
tin/volumes/85/8/06-037630.pdf> is examined by Rudi Coninx. Einar Heldal e=
t al. argue that the Timor-Leste experience <http://www.who.int/bulletin/vo=
lumes/85/8/06-036087/en/index.html> shows TB control is possible during em=
ergencies, but long-term nationwide strengthening remains a challenge. Andr=
=E9 Ndongosieme et al. look at TB control during the humanitarian crisis in=
the Democratic Republic of the Congo <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/=
85/8/06-039420/en/index.html> , and suggest fruitful results are possible t=
hrough effective partnerships.
Supon Limwattananon et al. call for policy improvement to reduce out-of-poc=
ket health care payments <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/8/06-03372=
0/en/index.html> for Thailand's poorest. Ardeshir Khosravi et al. conduct =
the first systematic evaluation of Iranian mortality data sources <http://w=
ww.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/8/06-038802/en/index.html> and find that in=
fant mortality has decreased: adult mortality has decreased less substantia=
lly. Silvina Ramos et al. reviewed maternal deaths in Argentina <http://www=
.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/8/06-032334/en/index.html> in 2002 and found =
that the probability of dying was 10 times greater in the absence of essent=
ial obstetric care.
The costs of scaling up malaria control <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volume=
s/85/8/06-039529/en/index.html> to meet international goals are estimated =
by Anthony Kiszewski et al. This analysis highlights the need for more reso=
urces to be invested if global targets are going to be met. Routine or mand=
atory HIV/AIDS testing may not be feasible <http://www.who.int/bulletin/vol=
umes/85/8/06-037671/en/index.html> in sub-Saharan Africa in the short- to =
medium-term, according to AD Asante. Barriers to HIV testing must be remove=
d, workforce improvements undertaken, the culture of poor health service us=
e overcome and the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS dispelled if such testin=
g is to be practical or desirable, this author argues.
