In this issue, Clifford C Missen & Thomas M Cook argue that health organiza=
tions that distribute information through web sites <http://www.who.int/bul=
letin/volumes/85/4/07-041475/en/index.html> are not reaching the people th=
ey hope to serve in developing countries. Only one-sixth of the world=E2=80=
=99s population uses the Internet and most of those people are in developed=
countries. Tikki Pang writes about the challenge of converting research fi=
ndings and scientific evidence into action <http://www.who.int/bulletin/vol=
umes/85/4/07-040824/en/index.html> in developing countries.=0D
=0D

In the News section, Theresa Braine reports on WHO=E2=80=99s plans to launc=
h an essential medicines list for children <http://www.who.int/bulletin/vol=
umes/85/4/07-010407/en/index.html> . Hannah Brown writes about plans to est=
ablish Rwanda=E2=80=99s first postmortem programme that will help with the =
diagnosis of cerebral malaria <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/4/07-=
020407/en/index.html> in children. In this month=E2=80=99s interview <http=
://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/4/07-100407/en/index.html> , Dr Abdel-Ra=
zzak Al Gezairy talks about challenges at the helm of WHO=E2=80=99s Regiona=
l Office for the Eastern Mediterranean. The Bulletin also reports on the Gl=
obal Health Histories <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/4/07-110407/e=
n/index.html> project and events leading up to WHO=E2=80=99s 60th annivers=

Bhagwan Nene et al. analysed the factors that stopped women from coming for=
ward=0D
=0D
for cervical cancer screening <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/4/06-=
031195.pdf> in Maharashtra, India from 1999 to 2003 and found these to be:=
lack of knowledge about the disease, lack of access to care and lack of fa=
mily support plus poor-quality services. Shannon Doocy et al. studied surve=
ys of nine districts in Aceh, Indonesia and found that 17% of the districts=
=E2=80=99s pre-tsunami population <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/4=
/06-033308.pdf> were reported dead or missing in the disaster, with most o=
f them being women.=0D

Anders Nordstr=C3=B6m et al. discusses what it will cost to achieve the hea=
lth-related Millennium Development Goals <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volum=
es/85/4/07-041467/en/index.html> in 2015. Benjamin Johns et al. estimated =
the cost of scaling up <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/4/06-032037.=
pdf> maternal and neonatal health care to achieve universal coverage in 75=
developing countries by 2015 and estimated that an additional US$ 39.3=E2=
=80=9355.7=0D
=0D
billion would be needed. Karin Stenberg et al. estimated the additional res=
ources required to scale up priority child health interventions <http://www=
.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/4/06-032052.pdf> in 75 countries by 2015 and =
found that=0D
=0D
US$ 52.4 billion would be needed.=0D

Ruth M Bland et al. examined the infant feeding intentions <http://www.who.=
int/bulletin/volumes/85/4/06-032441.pdf> of 1253 HIV-infected=0D
=0D
and 1238 uninfected mothers in KwaZulu=E2=80=93Natal, South Africa in Augus=
t 2001 and September 2004. They found that most HIV-infected mothers did no=
t have the resources needed for safe replacement feeding, such as clean wat=
er and access to a refrigerator.=0D

Shanthi Mendis et al. assessed the availability and affordability of 32 med=
icines <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/4/06-033647.pdf>=0D
=0D
for palliative cancer care, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respi=
ratory disease and glaucoma in Bangladesh, Brazil, Malawi, Nepal, Pakistan =
and Sri Lanka in 2005. They found that 7.5% of these medicines were availab=
le in the public sector in all countries except Brazil, where 30% were avai=
lable, and Sri Lanka, where 28% were available.=0D
=0D
=0D
=0D
Maria Romoren et al. show in their 2000=E2=80=932001 study of antenatal car=
e in Botswana that current management of trichomoniasis and bacterial vagin=
osis <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/4/06-031922.pdf> fails to ide=
ntify those infected, and propose a management strategy for these condition=
s in pregnant African women.=0D
=0D
=0D
=0D
Kennedy N Otwombe et al. found that more than 50% of records had not been a=
ccounted=0D
=0D
for in the national database in Kenya through a national data collection ex=
ercise conducted among voluntary counselling and testing centres <http://ww=
w.who.int/bulletin/volumes/85/4/06-033712.pdf> in 2004. The reasons were: =
a lack of uniform data collection tools, a shortage of counsellors and no d=
ata tracking system.=0D
