Dear Sirs, dear colleagues,=0D
Neglected infectious diseases (NID) such as leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis=
=0D
and childhood infections contribute significantly to premature death,=0D
disability and poverty in the developing world. Under the current 6th=0D
Framework Programme (2002-2006), the European Union has committed 42 mill=
=0D
=E2=82=AC to support research in this area through the International Scient=
ific=0D
Cooperation (INCO) programme. The scientific community and the European=0D
Parliament - in its recent report on neglected diseases in developing=0D
countries - have emphasised the need to substantially increase investment=
=0D
in research on effective control measures and strategies. As the new 7th=0D
Framework Programme is about to start in 2007, the European Commission is=
=0D
organising an international conference=0D
=E2=80=9CHow to meet the challenge for Europe=E2=80=99s international resea=
rch cooperation=0D
in the field of Neglected Infectious Diseases=E2=80=9D=0D
=0D
in Brussels, Belgium from 8 to 9 November 2006.=0D
Its objectives are:=0D
1. To discuss future funding strategies for research on NIDs=0D
considering the European Parliament=E2=80=99s recent <TitreType>report</Tit=
reType>=0D
<Titre> and the current international debate on investing in the control=0D
of NIDs.=0D
2. To develop an agenda for NID-related Community funding in FP7.=0D
3. To link EU-funded projects to the wider field of national and=0D
international initiatives for NID control=0D
=0D
The conference is organized with support from the European Parliament=E2=80=
=99s=0D
rapporteur on neglected diseases, and will provide a platform for dialogue=
=0D
between the European and non-European scientific community, policy makers,=
=0D
research managers, representatives of relevant international NGOs, UN=0D
bodies and other interested parties.=0D
