Special Session for Global Forum 10, Cairo
Neglected Diseases: Supporting the Global Framework on Essential Health R&D
Monday, 30 October: 18h00 to 19h30
Conrad Cairo Hotel
The need for increased support of essential innovation for neglected diseas=
es is a growing global concern. Governments are being urged to lose no more=
time in supporting new funding mechanisms for neglected disease research a=
nd development and create a favourable environment to stimulate (R&D). A ha=
ndful of "Innovative Developing Countries" are becoming more proactive in t=
he field of drug R&D. Yet innovation in drug discovery for neglected diseas=
es remains a critical gap.=A0 In May, the 192-member WHA approved a resolut=
ion that established a working group to draft a global strategy on intellec=
tual property, health research and development, and new medicines for disea=
ses that especially affect developing countries. These are small but positi=
ve steps towards addressing the greater problem of R&D for neglected diseas=
es. Much more remains to be done. A distinguished panel of speakers will di=
scuss various aspects of this issue.
