Dear reader,
Please click here
<http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/en/index.html> to read the
table of contents for the October issue of the Bulletin.
In the October issue of the Bulletin, Cesar Victora et al
<http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/06-030502.pdf> . find in
their study that the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI)
strategy is not reaching the poorest communities in Brazil, Peru and the
United Republic of Tanzania. Discussing their findings in an editorial,
Davidson R Gwatkin
<http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/06-035006.pdf> writes that
the strategy seems to have been implemented "least energetically" in
areas where it was most needed.
Two research papers by Manica Balasegaram et al.
<http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/05-028399.pdf> investigate
treatment of trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) in Congo. The first
analyses treatment outcomes and risk factors for relapse in patients
with early-stage human African trypanosomiasis in 2002-4. The second
looks at the pros and cons of treating late-stage Gambian
trypanosomiasis with melarsoprol versus eflornithine. Citing the two
papers, Bulletin papers editor Laragh Gollogly
<http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/06-034850.pdf> asks readers
in an editorial whether there are exceptions to the rule that
researchers should seek ethical approval for their studies.
Two articles are devoted to emergency response. Mohammad Wasay & Saad
Shafqat <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/06-035022.pdf>
propose in an editorial that WHO establish a centre to coordinate the
response to natural disasters and a global database of volunteer health
workers. Philip Anderson et al.
<http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/05-028548.pdf> argue in
their public health review that systems providing emergency medical care
are potent public health tools for reducing death and disease.
In the News, William Burns
<http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/06-011006/en/index.html>
reports from Geneva on WHO's role in helping to monitor and control
disease outbreaks and on the difference the revised International Health
Regulations will make in this respect from June 2007. Carolyne Nakazibwe
<http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/06-021006/en/index.html>
reports from Kampala on a novel approach to treating malaria in Uganda
and other African countries: home-based care. Mawusi Afele
<http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/06-031006/en/index.html>
reports from Accra on how a street food boom in Ghana is spurring
efforts to improve food safety. In this month's interview, Dr Kevin De
Cock
<http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/interview1006/en/index.html>
, Director of WHO's Department of HIV/AIDS, discusses the latest trends
and developments in HIV/AIDS prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
C M Cameron et al.
<http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/06-030833.pdf> investigated
long-term health service use following non-fatal injury in adults in
Manitoba, Canada. A von Gottberg et al.
<http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/06-030361.pdf> analysed the
prevalence of the Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) strain in South
Africa within the first five years of the introduction of conjugate Hib
vaccine into the routine child immunization
schedule in 1999. Shally Awasthi et al.
<http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/84/10/05-029207.pdf> identified
several practices, which possibly result in the high neonatal mortality
rate, including delayed referrals caused by traditional healers, and
they quantified community identification of signs of neonatal
illness or 'danger signs' as listed under the Integrated Management of
Neonatal and Childhood Illnesses approach.
